The fortress Bourzi


Nafplion is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece, near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was the first capital of modern Greece, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. Nafplion is now the capital of the peripheral unit of Argolis. According to Greek mythology, the city founded by Nauplius, the son of Poseidon, and was fortified with Cyclopean walls. Archaeological findings prove the existence of the city from the Mycenaean years already.

Mycenae and Palamidi castle may only be accessed by walking uphill. It is a strenuous walk and you must be in good physical condition. There is a pathway, but there are also steps.

Mycenae

1. MYCENAE                                                                  Duration of visit: 2 hours

Mycenae - is one of the most important city-states of ancient Greece. There developed the period 1700-1001 BC the Mycenaean civilization, the most ancient civilization of the eastern world and the first official Greek Civilization. From the preserved remains today the most important are:

Both royal funerary enclosures were part of the extensive prehistoric cemetery; b. The Treasury of Atreus (Tholos tomb); c. The vaulted tomb of Clytemnestra; d. The Lion Gate; e. The Royal Palace; f. The church; g. North Gate; h. Underground tank

Epidaurus

2. EPIDAURUS                                                                Duration of visit: 1 hour

Epidaurus - is the city where, according to mythology, Asclepius was born and began worshiping there for the first time in the 6th century. The worship of the sacred always accompanies the serpent. Asclepion of Epidaurus was the most famous of all Asclepia of ancient Greece because of the many and serious cases were cured there. Its area was great and disposes guesthouses, gymnasium, stadium and the famous for its acoustics, Theatre, where it is intended for the amusement of patients and has a capacity of 15,000 spectators. There you will have the opportunity to visit:

The Theatre of Epidaurus, the most beautiful and best preserved ancient theater in Greece with its wonderful acoustics; b. The archaeological museum

After driving 45 minutes from Epidaurus we will reach Nafplion where you will have free time for lunch

 

Nafplion

3. NAFPLION                                                                  Duration of visit: 1 hour

Nafplion - is really two places in one-a modern seaside resort, and the old town which once served as a Frankish-Venetian bulwark with its fortress dominating the area from the summit of Palamidi. The most important sights are:
a. The castle of Palamidi; b. The fortress Bourzi- is a small island in front of the port of Nafplion
Entrance fees: 4€ in Palamidi
Free in Bourzi
After driving 20 minutes from Palamidi castle we will make a city tour by bus and then we will reach Nafplion Port
